Your story is different because you are different

You are a unique individual who has a unique perspective and a unique way of telling a story unlike anybody else in the world.

“There are people out there who are searching for a book like yours. They might need that escape, that help, or that dopamine hit of romance. You just have to point your book in the right direction.

You don't need thousands of followers to sell books

I have an author who had 800 followers on Instagram. Her book hadn't done well when it was released, so we readjusted her positioning and marketing. Within 90 days, she sold almost 3,900 books.

“It shows you don't need thousands of followers. It's not just about getting eyeballs on you; it's about how you actually convert those people into book buyers.

The key to marketing is repetition

I always tell authors that the key to marketing is repetition. You can start repeating your message, and that is really how you make it easy for people to share your work.

People begin to associate you with certain things. They might say, ‘Oh, yes, Ellie writes about this.’ That's how people start to understand what you do.

Don't waste your time looking for a quick fix

There is no such thing as a quick fix or one marketing hack.

If someone has seen success with a particular hook, it might work for them because they know their messaging, they know who their reader is and they know what that reader responds to. If you don't know those things, simply copying the same hook won't necessarily have the same impact.

“It's not about mimicking another author's success. It's about understanding how you connect with readers and what makes your writing unique.

Your book may take time to find its readers

Your book has a long life ahead of it. Sometimes it needs to take a little time to get going.

When you look at some of the biggest authors, their so-called overnight success might come 15 books into their career. You don't see the years of work they put in, the consistent posting or everything they did behind the scenes.

You're looking at the leaves on the tree. You aren't seeing the roots.

You are an author with a business

Once you have your messaging and understand what clicks with readers, everything else starts to fall into place.

It's not about having to dance around on social media or learning to be an influencer or content creator. You're an author. You're an author with a business, because your book is your business.

When you approach it like that, rather than simply trying to be entertaining, you can start to create a system that works for you.
